From the Publisher
This is a fantasy based on an Old Japanese folksong, Zui-Zui-Zukkorobashi. It is a children's song with hand movements and mysterious lyrics. A series of onomatopoeia refer to rushing in, closing doors, and keeping so quiet one can "hear a mouse eat rice" as an official procession passes carrying the Shogun's personal tea supply. The introductory melody line gradually accelerates with emphasis, or intensity. The lyrics for Zui-Zui-Zukkorobashi still have many interpretations. A performance should embody the mystery and vitality of this classic.
