“Gently hypnotic!”
This is a lovely piece by Howard Buss. Waves of sonorities wash over the listener with semiquaver passagework continually passing gently between all of the flutes throughout. The brief recitative-like section is very peaceful and the whole work is really quite hypnotic. This would really showcase a different aspect to the qualities of a flute choir which would be especially valuable in a concert situation.
From the Publisher
ZEPHYRS OF THE DAWN for flute choir by Howard J. Buss is an enchanting work that showcases the agility and beautiful sonority of the flute choir. The character of the music is meditative and at times conveys a hint of portent, as if to suggest that these gentle, yet persistent early morning breezes contain within them hints of the events of the coming day. The musical scoring is colorful and inventive, yet does not require the performers to venture into extreme registers or use extended techniques. It is scored for piccolo, five C flutes, alto flute, bass flute, and optional contrabass flute. Because of its modest technical demands and musical sophistication, this audience-friendly work is appropriate for both intermediate-level and advanced flute choirs. (5’) Grade IV.
