Composer's Notes

Written while I was still a student at the RCM, the Wind Quintet was first performed in 1971 at a Music in our Time concert, and in 1972 recieved it's U.S. premiere in Boston played by the Annex Players. In 1973 I revised the piece and the new version was performed on Radio 3 by the Twentieth Century Ensemble of London. It is a very short piece, lasting about 6 minutes. The music is continuous in character, moving through a variety of wind textures with the harmony and intervals gradually expanding outwards. The piece is dedicated to the memory of the distinguished Australian flautist, Douglas Whittaker, who died while I was revising the piece.
