This is a close adaptation of the arrangement that I undertook of The Water Is Wide for John Helliwell. We were working on the album Ever Open Door (Challenge Records) that features John with string quartet & hammond organ. This piece was one of only two that didnt include the organ, and was the arrangement that instigated the whole project. The Water Is Wide, also known as Waly, Waly, is a beautiful and simple traditional melody. In this arrangement the solo tenor (or soprano) saxophonist is given room to pull the melody around and to improvise around it, whilst the challenge for the saxophone quartet is balance. This is even more important than with the solo saxophone and string quartet version, with all the saxophones sharing the same timbral space. The soloist may fill in in the final pause, or play an improvised introduction if they like. Andy ScottItem Details
