“Perfect!”
The opening of 'Song' is marked 'cheerily' and this sets the tone for the first of these two lovely pieces, Mel Orriss's excellent arrangement make full use of the mixed flute format, with the upper two flutes having more of the notes, the middle flutes being a little easier and the low flutes pitched at exactly the right level. 'Starlight' is more reflective and slower with a melody and chordal accompaniment spread around all the six parts. Both movements are good to play and easy to put together. Perfect!
From the Publisher
Edward MacDowell wrote the piano suite Sea Pieces in 1898, shortly after his Woodland Sketches (which feature perhaps one of his most well-loved works, To a Wild Rose). In the first piece, Song, a jaunty main theme alternates with several different melodies in 'changing moods' - giving each instrument a chance to take the spotlight. Starlight is more reflective, with lush close harmonies perfectly suited to a choir of flutes.
