From the Publisher

Jean-Louis Tulou (1786-1865) was an extraordinary musician, a renowned flute-maker and professor of flute at the Paris Conservatoire. His Méthode de flûte (1851) remains one of a small handful of great works on modern flute study and technique. From that book I have carefully selected 45 of the finest duets, all at a level appropriate for the high-school student. This collection is designed to offer the player many hours of rewarding study and musical enjoyment.

Early in his career, Tulou spent several years playing in the Paris Opera. Probably as a result of this experience, his arrangements and compositions for flute show a consistent focus on melody and lyricism. For him, the flute always sings. Many of his studies employ melodies of some of the great vocal composers of his era - Haydn, Mozart, Donizetti - or reflect the influence of their lyric styles. these duets offer the modern-day flutist a wonderful opportunity to step back in time and enjoy a taste of the vitality of the European nineteenth-century music world. And although these studies were originally written for a pre-Boehm flute, they are very well-suited for today's instruments.

The special split-channel compact disc included in this edition, playable on any stereo system, offers students a chance to play these duets in the comfort of their own home. If there is no teacher or partner available, the student can play either the first part or the second part (accompaniment) simply by turning the stereo channel to the right or left.

Unlike many flute studies we encounter today, Tulou's duets are extremely musical and satisfying to hear as well as play. And with the accompanying CD, the student always has a playing partner. Playing actual music, instead of merely repetitive exercises, will give the student incentive to practice. And since these duets were designed primarily to instruct, the student will be gaining the pleasure of playing music and practicing at the same time. What better way to study the flute?
