Taryeong is a specific type of Korean folk music. It originated in villages, and characteristically repeats sounds and words, expressing the longings of the average person.

GYEONG-BOG GUNG TARYEONG

Gyeong-bog gung is one of the largest palaces built during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1897). This piece was written as a criticism during the palace’s reconstruction and expansion, depiciting a growing disparity between the common people and the royal family.

GEUMGANGSAN TARYEONG

Geumgangsan is a mountain located in North Korea noted for its’ scenic beauty and popularity with tourists. This beautiful mountain has a different name in each season; this taryeong sings of its beauty during the spring.

NAMPO TARYEONG

Nampo is a city and seaport located in North Korea, and the song details a typical day in a fishing village.

TARYEONG

This piece was not originally meant for singing, and is instead a lively dance piece.
