“Marvellous!”
This is a wonderful trio which will add extra colour to any chamber music recital. Samuel Zyman is best known for writing challenging music and this is not easy by any means. It is however very appealing and, by turns, exciting, passionate and beautiful to listen to. Each movement represents a character from Cervantes story of Don Quixote. Starting with an arresting portrayal of the Don which has plenty of rhythmic energy, Sancho Panza is happy and laid-back but becomes increasingly agitated. The fictitious Dulcinea is lyrical and full of yearning, and Quixote's horse Rocinante returns to the energy of the opening. As this is a substantial piece it's good to know that each of these is robust enough to stand alone but it would be great to play the whole work too. It's marvellous!
