“An unusual combination of instruments”
Chris Hankin Just Flutes staff member - [email protected]
if you are unfamiliar with the compositions of Melanie Bonis (1858 - 1937) this is quite a good place to start. Scored for large wind ensemble, she uses her chosen instruments very well. Her harmonies are idiosyncratic without being outlandish, giving this nostalgic work more bite than you might expect. It isn't a technical feast for a million fingers, nor is it a rhythmic workout. She prefers here to shape her phrases using colour. The Prelude is is a lyrical waltz-like Moderato which is then followed by a snappy 6/8 fugue starting with a spiky oboe motif. The Choral allows all the parts to sing and the closing scherzando Badinage trips along rhythmically. It is expensive but good enough to warrant the price tag.
