As is quite common, this book comes with a DVD as well as two playalong CDs, and the quality of both resources is good. The 20-minute DVD covers the basics (posture, how to put the flute together, maintenence etc) up to the production of the first note, and it's all very clearly presented. The CDs are unusual in that the performance and the backing only are on the same track number, which might encourage pupils to play without the tune. The book itself progresses slowly, the emphasis being on establishing a good sound through small technical steps: middle octave G is reached by the end with F sharp and B flat the only chromatics covered. An interesting addition to the crowded world of the flute tutor.
