“Excellent”

'A source of reference and a guide for aspiring composers' is the subtitle of this excellent book, but there is a wealth of information here to be of use to us all. It starts with facts about basic notation and the next section 'composition: getting started' covers material that should help with the writing test for grade 5 theory. Chapters such as 'understanding key signatures' would be also be useful in this context. Instruments of the orchestra are covered in detail before more specific compositional techniques are introduced. The CD includes over 100 examples directly related to the text as well as 2 tracks for jazz improvisation. The book itself is intelligently laid out with cartoons, icons and musical examples to break up the text. With all this information it can in no way be considered expensive!
