Program Notes:
'The Song of Spring With Little Variations and Fantasies is my response to a request from Lois Bliss Herbine for a piece for piccolo and guitar that would emphasize the lyrical possibilities of the piccolo. The theme makes use of the piccolo's suggestion of an almost Asian sound in its lower registers, and the delicate sound of the two instruments in combination suggested little passing clouds of ideas that grow freely out of various elements of the opening melody with its accompaniment. Some are more strict variations than others, hence the title. As quickly passing as are some of the ideas, they accumulate a greater weight in the more declamatory and dramatic final section before a reprise of the theme.' Allen Krantz
also suitable for flute and guitar with a few adjustments mentioned on page 8
