I'm a great fan of Cecilia McDowell and I think that she writes really well at all levels, so I suppose it isn't surprising that I'm recommending this book. There are 5 pieces in all. Moonlight Sarabande is a gentle tune which will enable students to read high notes in a user friendly context. The 5/8 and changing meter is the challenge in On the Steps of Montmartre, again presented in an accessible style. Roumanian Song and Mango Tango stretch the technique and rhythmic skills further and the Irish influence in Jigging make for a real contrast of style within the album. It's all lovely!

The collection opens with a thoughtful Moonlight Sarabande followed by a haunting number in a quirky five eight rhythm, On the Steps of Montmartre. Roumanian Song transports us to the folk culture of the Transylvanian mountains. A passionate, South American Mango Tango gives us the feel of hot, lazy afternoons in Buenos Aires. In the final Jigging we are definitely back North of the Border with the swirl of the pipes and the Highland swing of the Scottish fiddle.
