“A good transcription.”
Ravel's Sonatina for Piano works very well in this good transcription .The flute part feels completely natural and there is enough interest in the accompaniment to convey much of the colour of the original. It's great to be able to access music like this and it would be very easy to believe that Ravel intended to write it for us in the first place!
From the Publisher
Ravel was 30 years old in 1905 when he composed this work, which aroused great enthusiasm from its creation. By its conciseness, it takes the opposite view of contemporary piano works still imbued with Germanic post-romanticism (Dukas, d'Indy, Franck). Truly modern, although classical in form, it participates in this renaissance for the forms of the past (the central movement is a minuet!), which Claude Debussy will in turn sublimate a few years later with his last three sonatas (1915-1917).
