Our Description
Vienna, March - April, 1816. Franz Schubert wrote his "Sonatas for pianoforte accompanied by a violin". 1816 was a particulary disappointing year for Schubert. A modest music teacher's employment in Laibach was given to "somebody else". A first book of songs sent to Goethe by his friend Spaun came back without comment. Not even his friends asked for his sonatas, let alone publishers. His brother Ferdinand found them among his unpublished work: "Three easy, beautiful sonatas for piano and violin". As an extra to 50 song books he sold them to Anton Diabelli who published the pieces in 1836, eight years after Schubert's death, under the title Sonatinas.
