“Useful audition material?”
The first movement of this varied piccolo sonata would make a good contrasting piece for an audition. Mostly highlighting agile fingerwork and flexible articulation, there is short lyrical section to showcase tonal control and tuning. The piano part shouldn't present too many problems for the accompanist which is an added bonus. The second movement Cantilena could have been written as a film score with it's lush harmonies and meandering melody, and the closing Presto is a typical Gary Schocker 6/8 romp!
From the Publisher
Sonata No 3 is a memorial work eulogizing Carl Hall, piccoloist of the Atlanta Symphony. A powerful addition to the piccolo recital repertory, Schocker’s third sonata is serious without being somber. The unique singing style of the instrument is fully realized in this important new addition to the piccolo repertoire.
