“One of the very best flute sonatas.”

Chris Hankin Just Flutes staff member - [email protected]

Dedicated to Moyse, Gaubert's second sonata is the most demanding of his three largest works and it delivers on all the aspects of flute playing of the period. The opening Pastorale opens and closes gently, in between which are semiquaver passages that flow around the flute and piano creating ever-shifting textures. The Andante is more reflective before becoming faster moving and positive. The return of the melody here is even more poignant. The last movement is full of restless energy. This is one of the very best flute sonatas and it is simply beautiful to play!

From the Publisher

This edition is a reprint of the 1925 publication of Philippe Gaubert's Sonata No. 2 (Deuxième Sonate) for Flute and Piano. Gaubert’s second flute sonata was written in 1925, and is dedicated à Marcel Moyse (to Marcel Moyse), the first flutist of the Orchestre de la Société des concerts du Conservatoire at that time.

Measure and rehearsal numbers have been added in addition to a brief foreward, making this edition much more rehearsal friendly than any other version out there.
