“Little known music”
If you'd like to get completely off the beaten track then maybe you should consider this Sonata which is part of a the series 'Virtually Unknown Music' from Roz Trubcher. It proves that there is plenty of good music to be found in unlikely places! Graeff was a 'professor of Flute' who settled in England in 1802. This charming work is short and relatively simple, so it's ideal for introducing a younger player to the classical style.
From the Publisher
- In 3 movements. The 1st movement is lively in a style reminiscent of Haydn and contrasts beautifully with the soulful slow movement so rich in poignant harmony. The finale is a rumbustious rondo that anticipates Rossini's style. The whole work was written with a figured bass that has been realised by Roz Trubger for this edition. It is published as part of the Virtually Unknown collection. A free play-along CD [ 2 speeds with and without solo] is included with the printed book.
- J G Graeff was a flute player who was born in Germany but who spent most of his life in London and became a naturalised Englishman known as John George Graeff. He was a pupil of Haydn and a colleague of Clementi. This sonata was written c.1790.
