Arthur Willner (1881 - 1959) studied piano and composition in Leipzig and Munich, was then deputy director of the Stern Conservatory in Berlin, later a teacher at the New Vienna Conservatory, until he emigrated to England in 1938. His compositional work is extensive; many of his works have been premiered by such important performers as Henri Marteau and Carl Flesch. However, many of his works remain unpublished to this day. The present sonata for flute alone is Willner's only flute piece. It occupies an important position in the flute literature of the first half of the 20th century between the Sonata (Appasionata) in F sharp minor by Sigfrid Karg-Elert from 1917, which was also published by Zimmermann, and the Eight Pieces by Paul Hindemith from 1927.Performance duration (approx): 12
