Hoyer, born on January 9, 1891 in Weißenfels (Saale), studied at the Leipzig Conservatory under Reger, Straube, Krehl and Pembaur and in 1911 became organist at the Ritter- und Domkirche in Reval. In 1912 he went to St. Jacobi in Chemnitz as the first organist. Since 1926 he was a teacher of organ playing and theory at the Leipzig Conservatory and at the same time organist at St. Nicolai. He died on June 12, 1936 in Leipzig. Hoyer, whose work is gradually being rediscovered by organists, published several flute works with the Zimmermann music publishing house, including the Sonata for Flute and Piano No. 1 in D major, Op. 31, which was first published in 1923 and was reintroduced to the publishing program in 1977.
