“A serious piece with a serious back story”
Sometimes flute choir music transcends its genre. Here the narrative of an atrocity against the LGBTQ community in the US does exactly that. Taking 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' as a basis for this substantial piece gives it an added poignancy which from the outset is unsettling. The rage that follows fragments and distorts the tune so that it almost unrecognisable, before an uneasy calm is restored. There is no triumphant ending, just the original melody over another unsettling bassline which represents the mixure of fear and hope felt by outsiders everywhere. To play this well written piece is to support such people.
