Inspired by Prokofiev’s Vision Fugitive for solo piano, Liesa Norman's Purple Phobia blends crunchy jazz harmonies with the Russian Master’s quixotic melodies to create this classical crossover flute duet. The dueling flute parts dance through sprightly rhythms and chase each other through playful articulated passages. It’s flexible format as a two-flute and full rhythm section or two-flute and piano piece makes it an appropriate selection for concerts in venues from intimate jazz clubs to formal concert halls. As this composition gives each of the musicians an opportunity to experiment with improvisation in the solo sections, midway through the piece, it also serves as an excellent teaching tool for student and professional flutists who want to develop their improvisation skills and their jazz sensibilities. Purple Phobia makes a lively addition to any flute recital.
