“So much fun!”

Chris Hankin Just Flutes staff member - chrish@justflutes.com

This is a rumbustious Saltarello which is intelligently voiced to give all players a chance to shine. The energy is driven by the syncopated rhythm of the bass flute part which is almost constant throughout. The alto is also used as a slightly more complex rhythmic glue, leaving the flutes to dance around each other, passing tuneful fragments to and fro. All of this is set within moderate note ranges which is a real bonus, as is the fact that the C flute substitute alto part can be used as extra ballast when playing with larger numbers. Adding a tambourine would add even more colour to this exuberant music which is so much fun to play. Everyone will love it - a winner all round!

From the Publisher

Saltarello, in this instance, is a 14th century lively dance from Italy. Originally, this piece is monophonic with a repeated 4 phrases as seen in estampies. Estampies are believed to be the oldest surviving examples of purely instrumental music from Western Europe. The arranger fell in love with Saltarello during Freshman Music History, and always wanted to arrange the piece for a larger ensemble. She found the opportunity when she was asked to be one of the conductors for the Atlanta Flute Club's 2015 Honors Flute Choir.
