From the Publisher

Reynaldo Hahn was a French composer and conductor of Venezuelan origin. He was born in Caracas in August of 1875 and died in Paris in 1947. Hahn was the youngest of twelve children, his father an affluent engineer-inventor of German-Jewish descent and his mother from Venezuela. The volatile political atmosphere in South America during the 1870s prompted the decision to move the family from Caracas to Paris.

He arrived in Paris at the age of three and was soon considered a child prodigy. Hahn began performing at royal courts around the age of five. At age ten, he began studying composition with Massanet at the Conservatoire and quickly earned an outstanding reputation for his songs, which he sang himself to his own piano accompaniment.

He was forced to leave Paris in 1940 during the Nazi occupation, but returned at the end of the war to take an appointment as director of the Paris Opera in 1945. Hahn loved the theatre, and wrote operettas, operas, and ballets.

Reynaldo Hahn wrote several chamber pieces which utilized flute, and this elegant piece, Romanesque, originally written for flute, viola and piano is arranged here for flute, alto flute, and piano. This beautiful work utilizes a simple theme with a blending of tonal colors and sonority that demonstrate Hahn's compositional mastery.

Romanesque

The term Romanesque is used to describe a type of architecture dating from the ninth to the twelfth centuries. It also refers to paintings and sculptures from that period. The music from this era was often chant-like in nature with simple lines and repetitive chord changes. Hahn has cleverly captured this medieval style in this composition.
