“This so beautiful.”

Chris Hankin Just Flutes staff member - [email protected]

This lovely piece which is based on a poem by Christina Rosetti brings out all the emotion associated with the loss of a loved one. The text is heart-felt and the melody follows its contour so very effectively that is easy to see the rising and falling of the lines as you play. Hilary Taggart not only completely understands how to write for the flute but also how to accompany it, so the piano part adds to texture, supporting the flute to allow the lines to really sing. This is beautiful and simple, and very touching.

This is a setting of a poem by Christina Rossetti for either flute or voice with piano. The music is written in a pastiche of the Romantic style of Rossetti's era and lasts around 2 minutes.

The poem is poignant, and the text is provided for each phrase so that the players can emote the meaning of the poem. The singing nature of the melodies are ideal for tone development and phrasing in the middle and upper registers, and although there are some chromatic alterations the lines are relatively simple so could be approached by a replatively novice player. The upper range extends up to high G.

The piano part provides gentle accompanying role and is relatively uncomplicated, focussing mostly on an arpeggiated singe line. It could be reasonably attempted by teachers who are not first study pianists, or by piano students. I wonder too if it might be relatively easily adapted for harp.

This is a tuneful little piece which provides a good opportunity to engage with a text; it could be an enjoyable addition to a recital programme.

From the Publisher

“Remember” is one of Christina Rossetti’s most famous works and this profoundly moving and very beautiful poem was the inspiration behind this piece for flute or voice and piano. It is written in a musical style that is contemporary to the legendary poet’s era, and tries to make the sentiments a personal vehicle for her voice. The piece endeavours to be feminine, caring and selfless, which seems to be her message.
