Raising an Amazing Musician

Subtitled 'You, Your Child and Music', this book aims to help parents understand and support musical education given principally through instrumental lessons. It covers a wide range of topics from choosing an instrument to choosing a career in music, but possibly the most useful part is chapters 7-9 entilted 'What happens in music lessons', 'Practice' and 'How can I help my child's progress?' Although a little simplistic at times ('good teachers always expect the best from their pupils'), this will help to prepare and reassure those for whom music appears to be a wholly mystifying activity. There are chapters on music in school and music and technology, and children with both special needs and great talent are also catered for. There is even a glossary of useful words ('fingering - the placing of fingers on a musical instrument'). As you would expect from the ABRSM, this book is very well produced and will be a great help to both parents and teachers alike.
