Paul Harvey was born in Sheffield (UK) in 1935 and started playing the clarinet at the age of 11. He went on to become a member of the National Youth Orchestra, and then gained a scholarship to go the Royal College of Music in 1952, where he studied clarinet with Frederick Thurston and Ralph Clarke, and also composition with John Addison.
