The idea of Q the music was born in the bar at Dartington Summer School about four years ago, when a random group of my wind & brass playing friends & I were discussing the fact there always used to be ‘pop up’ performances to entertain the queues before the big evening concert. I started suggesting titles for a queue performance, & they challenged me to write it before the following year. Unfortunately that particular group of friends didn’t all converge in the same week after that, so last year I re-arranged the piece for wind quintet – a more conventional group of instruments. Q the Music in its new form received its first performance by the London Myriad ensemble in February, 2017, & they performed it again in September.
Q The Music received an Honourable Mention in the Newly Published Music Competition at the 2019 NFA.
