“Rhythm, rhythm, rhythm!”
This such a good piece! The opening rhythmic motif starts in unison before developing and fragmenting. Ramos uses the range of the ensemble well, with the piccolo and bass flute both really adding to the instrumental colour and texture. The dissonant held chords add to the feeling of general unease as they slip in and out of the structure, and the work ends with more uncertainty. Rhythm is the key to this, and if you can master its intricacies a very different style of quartet music opens up to you.
From the Publisher
Prometheus is named after the mystic chord of Alexander Scriabin which I use as harmonic and melodic material. I developed a motif among all instruments creating phase games of rhythm between each instrument, leading to a section of suspended chords and small solos between each other (almost like a dialogue). After that section, the same motif appears again but, instead of being developed, it retrogrades and disintegrates until the end....
