Composer's Notes
The expression "In the Pocket" is frequently used by pop, rock and jazz musicians to describe music that possesses a rock-steady pulse or "groove". Any performance of this piece should indeed be "in the pocket". The music must groove jazzily in the outer sections where the quavers are swung. In the slow middle section ( where the quavers are even ) both the piano and flute melody should flow beautifully but it is still important to "feel" the underlying pulse.
