The composer says: Pikulir is a made-up word, a sort of word play combining piccolo (Croatian : pikolo) and pikulanje (a marble game). I imagined a piccolo playing with marbles. ( Marija Esih)
The music opens with an unaccompanied cadenza for piccolo before the piano enters with a rhythmic accompaniment which is by turns staccato and legato. A short contrasting section in waltz character forms a central section before a return to the lively jazzy style.
Marija Esih is another to join the growing ranks of Croatian and female composers, who are adding very likeable and worthwhile pieces to the repertoire for flute and piano. Marija really understands how to write effectively for the flute and piccolo, as she is both a performer and a teacher, and this work, will make a very good item in a recital programme, or be enjoyed by an advanced student as it offers teaching/learning opportunities in both technique and phrasing.
