Pièce de salon: Romance in F# minor for Flute and Piano
- Interesting, worth a look
From the Publisher
Anton Ortner 1823-1900
Ortner's compostion was perfectly suited to demonstrate the advantages of the new Boehm flute, especially in the full and rich sound in all three octaves, clearly audible already at the beginning in the expresssive cadenzas of the introduction entitled Maestoso. At the centre of this Romance is a deeply sad melody for the flute, remimiscent of a vocal scene in Italian bel canto. After a more elaborate, dramatic development, this genuine piece of salon music ends in a more hopeful F sharp major. The expansive melodic gesture and the dynamic range moreover make it clear why this work was rewarded with stormy applause, according to the enthusiastic reviewer.
The rediscovery of this sonorous work represents an enrichment of the flute repertoire in the field of high-quality salon-music.
