“Unexpected music for this combination.”
Daniel Dorff is an interesting composer and here he has taken this standard combination of instruments away from its usual habitat. He has also made each of the three movements substantial enough to stand alone which is always useful. Toccata has swirls of notes over a more static accompaniment that gives the movement drive and energy. Sarabande is a much more textural affair with an evenly spread range of material across the three instruments that is lush and indulgent. It is the Rondo that presents more normal scoring with the flute and piccolo dancing mainly in harmony over a supportive piano line. It's all very quirky and a stylistically extremely varied. It's also a great play!
From the Publisher
This high-energy delight is an exciting addition to the underserved combination of Piccolo, Flute, and Piano. Dorff’s fresh approach to dance rhythms of the Americas and modern jazz harmony combines with neo-traditional form and development to build a captivating 11-minute treat. A must-have for piccoloists and flutists.
