“Effective music for large forces.”
Paths of Deeper Gold uses the large forces of a flute orchestra most effectively. Each of the three movements is atmospheric in character with the both the piccolos and low flutes used skillfully to add colour and texture. The metre of 'Lustre of the dying day' changes constantly, taking the listener into the uncertain world of dusk. 'The moon is distant from the sea' is simpler in structure, evoking the stillness of night. 'Paths of Deeper Gold', the longest of the three, is complex with an oriental twist. The practical challenges posed are those of ensemble playing rather than showing off a virtuoso flute technique. The contrabass part is often independent but if you don't have one the altos and basses will be able to cover the lines easily. This is a really substantial work and although each movement could stand alone, performing it complete would make a great centre piece to any concert.
From the Publisher
Paths of Deeper Gold is a three movement work for flute orchestra/choir, commissioned by the Desert Echoes Flute Project, based out of Phoenix, Arizona. It was premiered at the 2016 National Flute Association Convention in San Diego, California. From the composer: “My conception of this piece moves in time from evening in the first movement (Lustre of the dying day), through the night in the second (The moon is distant from the sea), to daybreak in the third (Paths of deeper gold). It is a meditation on the different kinds of light, and the different moods, of those times of the night and day.”
