“Expressive and beautiful.”
This is a very expressive piece from Paul Sterne which carries on in the solo flute tradition of depicting Pan as started by Debussy in Syrinx. Spanning the complete range of the flute, Sterne uses the colours of the low register to contrast with the more animated higher writing to capture the capricious nature of Pan himself. This would be a great companion piece to Syrinx and it could stand alone too. It really is beautiful.
From the Publisher
Piece for solo flute with large mysterious and virtuoso melodies that evoke the character from Greek mythology. The bass tone of the flute drives a quiet atmosphere and the work develops as a great improvisation both solemn and delicate. A real research of tones and colors is needed for this meditative piece. Many alterations and short values are contrasted by sustained notes that are very expressive. - Tomoko UEMURA, Flutist
