“Tuneful Ewazen!”
This is a substantial work of four substantial movements. This may sound heavy-duty but, as always, Eric Ewazen has written a tuneful work. The flute and clarinet work together throughout with the piano providing the various textures needed for each piece. The very appealing 'Of Beauty' is light and airy, 'Of Sadness' is beautifully crafted for all three instruments, driving piano rhythms characterize 'Of Anguish', and 'Of Hope' contrasts a positive melody with more unsettled rhythms. Each movement will stand alone which is also extremely good news. This is an investment purchase and a tuneful one!
From the Publisher
Palisades Suite was written in 2007 for the Palisades Virtuosi. Ewazen originally started to compose this work as a four movement description of the seasons: however, the work came to describe the journey through the seasons of life. The composers own descriptions of the movements follow: “Of beauty…where melodies excitingly sparkle with life and energy and the wonder of life is a joy to behold, as the instruments playfully toss those melodies throughout the ensemble as they skip and leap” “Of Anguish…. where sorrow shifts abruptly to anguished, dramatic cries to the Heavens--as the ensemble tosses the melodies around now with intense passion, anger and desperation. Cascades of emotion erupt as if a sudden storm has engulfed our world…” “Of hope… where feelings of hope, renewal, rebirth are felt as the lines become purely lyrical, soft, gentle and caressing, as the piano supplies a buoyant support--life endures--the world endures--we go on in this wondrous journey with hope, resolution...and a heartfelt peace. “
