The opera this overture comes from was written by Giuseppe Verdi, and was first performed in St. Petersburg in 1862. Although it was a success, and was performed around the world soon after, Verdi continued to make revisions to the score until 1869, this overture was a late addition, replacing the previous brief Prelude. The plot of the opera is typically convoluted, dealing with ill fated lovers who are separated by fate. The ‘Fate’ motif of the opera is the first thing one hears in the overture; ominous repeated E’s. The opera is sometimes regarded as cursed, after various misfortunes overtook opera companies when staging the piece.
