From the Publisher
‘O What Peace We Often Forfeit’ is a set of variations based on the famous hymn tune, ‘What a Friend We Have in Jesus’. The piece starts with a lovely harmonisation of the old hymn. As the piece proceeds, the cares of the world begin to take over, but the theme is never lost. The ending is a haunting and mystical framing of the line in the hymn that gives the piece its title. The scoring reduces, leaving the alto and bass flutes to fade gently away. The piece was written for the National Flute Orchestra of Great Britain.
