New Gate is a non-linear work, based on a ballet with no story lline whose theme is passing from one state to another, There are copious notes about sound production in each instrument as special effects are called for.Kaija Saariaho is a contemporary Finnish composer living and working in Paris, best known for Graal Théâtre, frequently performed in spite of its ferocious virtuosic requirements. Unlike many of her other works, New Gates has no electronic extensions, but explores the relationship fully among four solo instruments of highly varying timbre. She gained international renown for her first opera l’Amour du Loin and continues a prolific compositional life with a wide range of international performances.
