“A lovely tribute to Eldred Spell”
Phyliss Avidan Louke has written this very effective piece for flute choir in memory of the great flute teacher Eldred Spell. The first movement, Mountain Prayer, is simply beautiful with its sweeping lines and gentle flute textures. Eleven Cats (Eldred loved cats!) is all stop start as cats do, before breaking into a hoedown, and Kayak on the Lake (he loved that too!) flows along dreamily. Colour is added with solos for piccolo and first flute, and the whole work manages to pay homage to a revered man as well as standing alone in its own right. You don't need to know anything about Eldred Spell to enjoy this fitting tribute.
