Magic Flute Fantasy is 'Opera on a Budget, a Reader's Digest version of The Magic Flute. Three musicains, without a stage, a set, or a singer in sight, take the listener through the plot of The Magic Flute from Overture to Finale. The highlights appear in a sequential order in their original keys, the piccolo and the treble of the piano representing the magical instruments in the plot - flute and glockenspiel. Follwing a fantasized version of the overture are these numbers:
Der Vogelfanger bin Ich ja (I am indeed the bird catcher - Papageno)
Wie stark ist nicht dein Zauberton (How strong is your magic tone - Tamino)
Alles fuhlt der Liebe Freuden (All feel beloved joy - Monostatos)
Der Holle Rache (Hell's Vengeance - Queen of the Night)
Ach, ich's fuhl's (O, I feel it - Pamina)
Ein Madchen oder Weibchen ( a maiden or a wife - Papageno)
Pa-pa-pa (Papageno and Papagena)
Final Chorus (chorus)
For those involved in educational outreach, Magic Flute Fantasy has proved to be an engaging program for children. Trio members may separate the above musical numbers with cadences and spoken commentary. Because they are in chronological order, the entire story can be told. After Der Vogelfanger bin ich ja' try singing your own version of Hm, Hm, Hm in which Papageno has his mouth padlocked. Kids love it!
