In "La technique d'embouchure", flutist Philippe Bernold, professor at the Paris Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique, presents a collection of exercises focusing respectively on energy and breath intensity in order to "place" the tone, like a singer would "place" the voice (see Vocalises and Intervals), and on embouchure with specific exercises designed to improve lip flexibility and strength for better control of the airflow and a more nuanced playing (see Sons filés). The final chapter deals with another embouchure issue: the sound attack.
Good control over air column, air stream and lip aperture allows for a full, rich, modulated tone. Such is the purpose of these exercises!
