Kovalamaca - “Chase”, was written in 2022 and dedicated to the Istanbul Flute Ensemble. In 2024, the low flute version was created for the Marmara Flute Orchestra Low Flute Section. The composer's arrangement of the folk song Silifke’nin Yogurdu, another work for flute ensembles, was dedicated to the Istanbul Flute Ensemble in 2019. Both of these works have been performed at various festivals and concerts both domestically and internationally.
"Chase" is a composition that revolves around the interactions and conflicts among instrument groups. This structure, reminiscent of an exhilarating chase where each instrument group follows the other, reflects the tension and dynamism within the music. The piece stands out with its original Turkish melodies, lending it a distinctive cultural identity. The use of Turkish aksak (irregular) rhythms enriches the flow of the music, adding depth and complexity to the musical narrative. These rhythms are typically found in vocal and instrumental dance music in Turkish music (such as folk dances), but they can also appear in some folk songs. In this piece, aksak rhythms typical to Turkish music, such as 5/8, 7/8, and 9/8, are used consecutively and intensively. During performance, 5/8 should be counted as two beats (2+3), 7/8 as three beats (2+2+3), and 9/8 as three beats (2+2+2+3).
With the unique combination of thematic motifs, rhythmic intricacies, and cultural elements, "Chase" invites listeners on a journey of exploration, encouraging them to discover different cultural and musical textures.
