“A very happy experience!”

Chris Hankin Just Flutes staff member - [email protected]

This is another great book from Gaspar Hoyos who is rapidly gaining a reputation for imaginative writing on the tricky subject of tone development. The practising of harmonics is not new and indeed all the exercises have a reassuring familiarity about them. However, this book is different. Starting with a warm-up exercise which focuses on creating a strong sound in the low register, the harmonics are then explored in stages. The principles of playing the first, second and third harmonics are fully established before further exercises develop the technique of how to produce them. The accompanying text here is crystal clear which is very useful, especially if you're working on your own. Subsequent studies then focus on the transformative benefit of harmonics to tonal development, including some affectionate nods to great players of the past. This is a thoroughly refreshing approach which makes for a very happy and fruitful experience. If you want to have a good sound buy this now!

From the Publisher

A workbook to help you develop your playing through the study of harmonics.

"This is a companion book to set about practising harmonics and learn a lot about the ingredients necessary for great flute playing. It is not a book against time, it is about taking your time. It is a book about exploration, about immersing yourself into the vibration of the notes. A book to stop and listen."

"I am thrilled to recommend Gaspar Hoyos’s remarkable book, The Happy Flute. This comprehensive guide on practicing harmonics is an invaluable resource for flute players of all ages and stages of their professional development. With detailed chapters dedicated to various flute players, including my beloved teacher William Bennett, and numerous exercises tailored for daily practice, this book is a treasure trove of knowledge and technique. “The Happy Flute” is a wonderful addition to any flutist’s daily practice, and I highly recommend it for anyone looking to deepen their understanding and mastery of harmonics on the flute. It is now in my warm-up folder on my iPad, and I really enjoy practising it. I am sure you will find it both beneficial and fun."
