Finale from String Quintet for Flute Quintet, Op.29
Pan - Journal of the British Flute Society
This transcription of the Finale from Beethoven's String Quintet Op. 29 is a gem! Gudrun Hinze (formerly a member of the flute quintet, Quintessenz), has done it again! She has skilfully arranged a masterpiece for three flutes in C (second doubling on piccolo), alto flute and bass flute. In this version of the piece, each part has its own difficulties and challenges. The parts are of equal ability and will keep each player fully engaged in the spiritof the movement. It is chamber music at its best - sophisticated, elegant and whimsical - and it is a wonderful addition to our negligible Beethoven repertoire.
This piece is not for the faint-hearted; it will take time to put it together, but what rewarding music to prepare and perform!

From the Publisher
Ludwig van Beethoven's rich and elaborate Finale from String Quintet, Opus 29, carries the nickname 'The Storm'. Rough tremolo, quick scales, and stormy 'fugati' symbolize the 'windy' side of the Autumn season and can be brilliantly executed by flutes. The stormy passages are interrupted by cozy Vienna style Ländler intermezzi, reminiscent of of the Viennese tradition of drinking the young wine of the year ('Heurigen') in rural taverns during November, singing together with accordion, or zither and fiddle.
