“Accessible to many.”
Shaul Ben-Meir arranges really well for large forces and here the sparkling music of the Shostakovitch Festive Overture can be accessed by a wide standard of players. The top four flute and the piccolo parts are tricky as you would expect and the bass parts, although looking easy on paper, need experience and stamina to maintain the line right through to the end. Flutes five and six are more straightforward with many less notes, and any slightly more adventurous writing is doubled elsewhere. Players new to the alto will also appreciate the opportunity to add to the overall sound without being overwhelmed technically. All of which means that this is great for mixed ablity and age groups and an investment purchase that will definitely payoff!
From the Publisher
The Festive Overture by Dmitri Shostakovich was written during a three-day period in 1954 and was performed at a concert at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow to commemorate the 37th Anniversary of the October Revolution. It is believed that Shostakovich based it on the overture to Mikhail Glinka's Russlan and Ludmilla, however, with his own touch in regards to form and harmony.
