From the Publisher
Fall is a work full of contrasting moods and influences. The delicate, melodic opening soon gives way to a dance-like melody on the flute accompanied by driving rhythms in the piano. A short, staccato section follows, with the harmony and rhythm influenced by Butler's interest in jazz. The piece finally transitions into a maestoso reinstatement of the opening phrase which slowly dies away against a restless piano.
