“What a piece!”
This is such a great piece from the very talented Wil Offermans. His work can be really challenging, but it's always innovative and this is no exception. Starting with whisper tones for all players, timbral trills and very simple multiphonics form the background for a wistful fragment of melody in D phrygian major which wends it's way across the upper parts. The central Moderato section is very rhythmic and there is a unity amongst the parts which adds strength to the structure .A cascade of scales leads into a con fuoco version of the Moderato before the piece ends in the same atmospheric way it began. The inclusion of the optional Wind Folk parts is interesting. Containing mostly breath and wind sounds, it opens up this music to younger players who might otherwise have to wait before they can tackle something in this style. You can also add percussion and any bass instruments you have to hand! Quite brilliant!
From the Publisher
The flute is such an exciting instrument, where a delicate sound is born by simply blowing a pipe. Our air is directly translated into audible sound. We may say that the essence of flute playing is the air, the blowing and the wind. The flute is one of the oldest musical instruments; bone flutes, stone flutes, an almost unlimited variety of ethnic flutes, baroque flutes, up to our modern flutes. Imagining this past, joining the present and with a wink into the future, Eternal Winds was born.
