An important inspiration for this composition was the delightful variety of sound possessed by the flute, a variety that in recent decades has been investigated thoroughly by numerous contemporary composers and flautists, who have exploited it with magical effect, and which is able to realize successfully not only musical but also extra-musical ideas. The wide range of harmonics, the manifold multiphonics, the elements of breath and noise, the special ways of playing the instrument, the inexhaustible possibilities of tone colour.
