“Different and playable.”

This captivating piece by the Brazilian composer Paulo Luiz Coutinho beautifully reflects his deep appreciation for both his country's folk music and jazz. The opening movement, El despertar del Lapacho, bursts with energy driven by vibrant cross-rhythms in the accompaniment and the arc of the flute melody. This has an unexpected ending and is a great choice for an encore. In contrast, La siesta offers a serene adagio flute line that gracefully weaves through softly undulating piano quavers. The final movement, El atardecer del Lapacho, is a gentle waltz in the style of Eric Satie. This is charming music and perfect for anyone seeking something fresh different and accessible. A winner!

From the Publisher

In the month of August, the city of Santiago del Estero is covered with vibrant colors of violet pink, pink, yellow and white from the flowering lapachos (native tree of the Chaco forests), which give a spring-like hue to the city landscape, streets, squares and paths lend. With a rainbow of colors after the gray winter, the Lapachos announce the return and renewal of life in the ancient and traditional “Mother of Cities” Santiago del Estero.

This work was written by Coutinho in the winter of 1991 for piano and flute and was dedicated to the pianist Delia Torresi Massuh and the flautist Martin Thren.

It contains the three moments “El Despertar (Sunrise)”, “La Siesta (Lunchtime)” and “El Atardecer (Dusk)” by Lapachos and summarizes the special musical aesthetic of the composer Coutinho: a very successful symbiosis between compositional resources the various styles of regional folk music and grammatical elements of the avant-garde, derived from traditional European music, especially impressionism. And all of this comes from a masterful knowledge of the different musical forms of expression that he chooses for his work, in particular the dimensions of harmony, individuality and rhythm.
